Vaccination coverage in children under one year of age and associated socioeconomic factors: maps of spatial heterogeneity
CONCLUSIONS: the results are useful for designing interventions regarding the structuring of vaccination services and the implementation of actions to increase vaccination coverage in clusters with less propensity to vaccinate.PMID:37729269 | DOI:10.1590/0034-7167-2022-0734

COVID-19 patients hospitalized after the fourth wave of the pandemic period in Vietnam: Clinical, laboratory, therapeutic features, and clinical outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Severe and critical COVID-19 patients frequently have several comorbidities, multiple lung lesions along with a variety of clinical signs. Despite receiving antivirals, antibiotics, corticosteroids, anticoagulants, and even ECMO therapy, the patient encountered multiple complications, with a fatality rate of up to 38.27%.PMID:37574340 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.07.020

Biodistribution assessment of cationic pullulan nanogel, a nasal vaccine delivery system, in mice and non-human primates
Vaccine. 2023 Jun 27:S0264-410X(23)00754-5. doi: 10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.065. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCationic cholesteryl-group-bearing pullulan nanogel (cCHP-nanogel) is an effective drug-delivery system for nasal vaccines. However, cCHP-nanogel-based nasal vaccines might access the central nervous system due to its close proximity via the olfactory bulb in the nasal cavity. Using real-time quantitative tracking of the nanogel-based nasal botulinum neurotoxin and pneumococcal vaccines, we previously confirmed the lack of deposition of vaccine antigen in the cerebrum or olfactory bulbs of mice and non-human primat...

Colonic Perforation Secondary to COVID-19 Induced Hemorrhagic Colitis in a Patient Heterozygous for Factor V Leiden
Am Surg. 2023 May 4:31348231173976. doi: 10.1177/00031348231173976. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUp to 17.6% of COVID-19 positive patients present with gastrointestinal symptoms and bowel wall abnormalities have been described in up to 31% of COVID-19 positive patients. Here, we present a case of a 40-year-old male diagnosed with COVID-19 complicated by hemorrhagic colitis leading to colonic perforation. CT scan of abdomen and pelvis demonstrated markedly distended descending and sigmoid colon with poorly defined wall, pneumatosis, and pneumoperitoneum. The patient was taken for emergent exploratory laparotomy for extende...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 13th 2023
This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...

Long-term efficacy and safety profile of splenectomy for pediatric chronic immune thrombocytopenia
Int J Hematol. 2023 Jan 9. doi: 10.1007/s12185-022-03529-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are few reports of the long-term efficacy of splenectomy in children with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). In a 33-year period, we performed splenectomies in 23 pediatric patients with ITP at a single institution in Japan. The age at surgery was 5-22 years with a median of 10 years. The follow-up period was 1-141 months with a median of 48 months. Before surgery, we confirmed the presence or absence of the accessory spleen by contrast-enhanced CT scan and we recommended vaccination with pneumococcal vaccine. Four patients underwen...

The COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination abandonment in children: spatial heterogeneity maps
CONCLUSION: in an attempt to mitigate the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the immunization program experienced setbacks. The presence of clusters points to the need to implement integrated strategies that may involve different sectors for an active search for children and prevent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases in the near future.PMID:36228235 | DOI:10.1590/1518-8345.6132.3642
